Diddy reveals he used to clean toilets during the New York heat wave.
Diddy, in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel on the “Late-Night Talk” show, when asked about his journey from nothing to the big and influential man he is currently, said he began from humble beginnings. He used to sell papers to paperboys. He said,
“I’m self-made, I come from just putting two quarters together, two thousand together, I was a paperboy since I was 12, I wasn’t even allowed to be a paperboy.
I was running a paperboy scam, you know what I’m saying? I was delivering papers to paperboys and I was splitting the money with them, you know, cleaning bathrooms in New York during the heat waves, just things that you know… painting houses, you know, doing all types of things.
You know you work hard, you get what you deserve, I’m blessed to have people that support me.”
Sean John Combs, also known by his stage name “Diddy” or “Puff Daddy,” was born on November 4, 1969, in New York City (Harlem). And just like other rappers who grew from humble beginnings like Jay-Z, Eminem, 50 Cent, Lil Wayne, Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, and Cardi B, he made a name for himself from having little to nothing to build from.
His father, Melvin Combs, was killed when he was just two years old and was singlehandedly raised by his mother, Janice Combs. He attended Howard University but dropped out halfway to pursue his music career. He founded “Bad Boy Records,” in which he signed artists like Notorious B.I.G., Mary J. Blige, and Mase.
Aside from music as one of his sources of income, he’s built a business name for himself with products ranging from spirits to fashion clothing brands (Sean John). This has made him one of the most successful figures in entertainment. His journey from the trenches to billionaire status is a testament to his resilience and ambition.
Despite being vocal about his humble beginnings and how steadfast he’s been in making sure he deserves the name he earned today, many fans believe he made his wealth from dishonest profits and through illicit ways.
One of his signees, Mase, has made multiple media outings and interviews revealing Diddy stole a lot from him, using his innovations and creativity to enrich himself without giving him any accolades. He even spearheaded “Bad Boy Records” while Diddy collected all the awards and never gave him a dime.
Diddy, on the other hand, has continuously denied all allegations made against him concerning finances, claiming people love ripping from where they didn’t show.
His recent accusations related to unlawful activities like s*x trafficking, rack****ring, s*xual a**ault, ra*pe, and m*rder, and unlawful involvement with minors, have also been heavily scrutinized.
He’s currently held in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center without bail, awaiting trial scheduled for May 5, 2025.
