Diddy revealed that his late partner, Kim Porter, came and visited him in his dreams after he made a record about her.
Diddy made an appearance on The Breakfast Club, where he talked about his late ex-partner, Kim Porter, and the record he made about her. The rap mogul and Kim Porter were in an on-and-off relationship before her passing.
The two had four children together and started dating in the mid-’90s. They had their first son, Christian Casey, in ’98 before breaking up in 1999. They reconciled in 2003 before welcoming twin daughters, D’Lila Star and Jessie James, in 2006. The couple finally parted ways for good in 2007, and despite having children together, they were never married.
Kim Porter was found dead in her home on Nov. 15, 2018, at the age of 47, and an autopsy report later revealed that she had died of lobar pneumonia. Diddy released a record featuring Babyface and John Legend titled Kim Porter, which, according to him, was a “love letter” to his ex-partner.
Diddy talked about the motivation behind his Kim Porter song during his appearance on The Breakfast Club. Asked by Charlamagne how difficult it was to make the record, Diddy replied,
“It was extremely easy to make the Kim Porter record,” he said. “My desire for wanting to be in her presence somehow is a constant thing that I yearned for,”
He continued.
Diddy also revealed that his intent in making the record was to get Kim Porter to come and visit him in his dreams.
“So when I made that record, I really believed in the power of music, and I felt like if I made that record with the intention of wanting her to come visit me in my dreams so I could have the best of both worlds. I know I can’t have her in the physical, but to just be able to be like ‘That’s my friend, that’s my dawg,’ it wasn’t just like my baby mama or my girlfriend, she was the only person that I listened to. It was like my navigation, and my navigation is off, and I got to like try to find a map,”
Said the New York rapper.
“So I was like, I really know how powerful my music is, and so I told Babyface and John Legend the story. I didn’t want to make the record for streams. The record is like an expression of love, a real love letter to Kim. It was really beautiful to be able to do that, and she has come and visited me in my dreams after I made that record,”
He continued.
Asked by Charlamagne tha God what they talked about in the dream, Diddy replied,
“We just talked some sh*t and smoked a j*int. We have done it a couple of times.”
Despite all the drama involving their relationship, Porter and Diddy remained close throughout the rest of her life as they continued to co-parent their children. Porter revealed in a couple of interviews that she and Diddy were like best friends and that he called her every day.
