Snoop Dogg says rappers should be grateful to Jay Z because hip-hop artists are now performing at the Super Bowl halftime show, and he has control of the event.
Kendrick Lamar’s selection to perform at the Super Bowl LIX halftime show in New Orleans sparked much controversy from fans and fellow rappers. According to some fans, Lil Wayne deserved to headline the event especially since the ceremony is in his hometown. Many fans believe Jay Z snubbed Lil Wayne due to his past feuds with Lil Wayne and some of his fellow Young Money artists.
Snoop Dogg is the latest rapper to weigh in on the topic. Guest on the Drinks Champs, Snoop Dogg was asked his opinion about Jay Z selecting Kendrick Lamar over Lil Wayne, and his thoughts about fans and fellow rappers calling out Jay Z. The veteran rapper stated that rappers and fans are instead supposed to thank Jay Z for giving a platform for Hip Hop artists to be able to perform at the Super Bowl, which wasn’t the case before.
“What we need to think about is that before Jay Z got control of the Super Bowl, there were no n***as performing,” said the 53 Year-old, “He’s creating a wave of artists to have an opportunity to perform. If you’re a good artist and a great artist, your time will come”
He continued.
Snoop Dogg headlined the Super Bowl LVI halftime show on February 13, 2022, alongside Dr. Dre, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar. The rapper also mentioned the fact that before he was selected to perform at the Super Bowl by Dr Dre, he wasn’t mad or felt like he must be there.
“I was never crying about it or mad about it when Dr. Dre called me and asked me to get his back, I was there for him. But I didn’t feel like I was supposed to be there or in demand to be there. This is a big event. They look at everything before they pick the person to perform. We should be honored that Hip Hop is able to be seen on that platform, for all of us, and not hate”
Snoop Dogg is not wrong as hip-hop artists only started headlining the Super Bowl Halftime show after the NFL signed a deal with Jay-Z in 2019, a deal that saw him take control of the Super Bowl halftime show, other events, and social activism. Just three years after the deal, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar, were selected to headline the event, marking the first hip-hop-centric Super Bowl halftime show in history.
