50 Cent wrote me a check to stop saying “G-Unot “~The Game.
The brand feud between 50 Cent and the game started in the mid-2000s after the game was removed from [50 Cent’s] G-Unit group in 2005 due to personal and business disagreements.
In a bid to get back at 50 Cent or settle scores, The Game launched a campaign against G-Unit and it became a rallying cry for fans who took sides with The Game during the feud. He also went ahead to promote the campaign launched against G-Unit in his songs, interviews, and even live performances
This campaign was launched by The Game to tarnish the “G-Unit” brand, though wasn’t given any attention before 50 Cent later realized it had much more effect on the brand “G-Unit” than he imagined.
The game continued to use it as a weapon in the public perception battle which wasn’t coming off any promising for 50 Cent’s brand “G-Unit” as it kept being greatly affected.
In response to combat the movement by The Game which was putting his brand on a bad public outage, according to Urban legends in an alleged rumor, and some from The Game’s mouth during an interview with “All the Smoke”, 50 Cent offered to pay the Game $1million to stop the campaign and stop the “G-Unot” because it was greatly damaging the “G-Unit” brand.
In an interview with “All the Smoke podcast” the game revealed that 50 Cent and Jimmy wrote him a $ 1 million check to stop saying “G Unot”.
“A lot of people don’t know this but 50 Cent and Jimmy gave me a million dollars check to stop saying G-Unot, they bought the trademark “G-Unot” and if you remember, when I was going around with the rat doing all that sh!t, it really hurts “G-Unit”. After they paid me, if you walked around you could stop seeing the candies tank tops, the G-Unot Mark echoes and shoes, sweatpants, caps, headbands, and beats all died. They [50 Cent & Jimmy] paid me to stop all that. So they had to pay me, I should have asked for more but I’m a hood ni**a and imma treat y’all. A million dollars just to stop saying this word? [G-Unot] What a check, and so they wrote the check and I stopped saying it.“
Although there’s never been any actual proof if a real financial transaction actually took place, we presume it did else the game wouldn’t have backed out. And though both [50 Cent and The Game] have since moved on from it,
The G-Unot is remembered in hip-hop history to be one of the most effective and successful troll moves, it displayed or demonstrated how branding and public perception could be weaponized in a rap feud. A scenario Drake is currently experiencing.
